Joybilee FarmHand Dyed Silk Belly Button Balls

Silk is a 100% natural and renewable fiber, always grown organically.   This is tussah silk, a "sustainable" silk  produced from wild cocoons..  The well prepared fiber is 4 to 6 inches long and easy to spin.  It is also beautiful used in silk fusion and adds shimmer to wool felt designs.

Silk is as warm as cashmere, 4 times warmer than wool and wicks moisture away from your skin, as wool would.  Silk retains its insulating capacity even when wet.  Silk is naturally fire resistant.  Silk is lustrous, soft, elegant, smooth, wonderful next to your skin, and naturally electrostatic.  Silk doesn't give up its electrons easily, so it protects your precious energy from escaping, unlike machine made,  petroleum based synthetic fibers.  If you've ever touched the door handle of your car on a dry, sunny winter day wearing manmade fibers you will appreciate the protection of silk, worn against your skin.

I had the opportunity to test the efficiency of  silk's electrostatic properties this winter.  We were at -30C and the air was alive with static electricity.  My children delighted in the sparks that flew out from their fingers as they shuffled their wool socked feet across the nylon carpet in our log house.  Their special fun was touching one of their parents on the cheek or finger, just to hear the spark!  I wore a silk blouse one day and found that although the child received a double shock for his trouble when he tried to shock me, I felt no shock at all, just a faint tingle on my skin.  A silk scarf or wrist warmers also offered some protection, while keeping the wearer warm, as well.

Our silk rovings are hand dyed in all seven of our Joybilee Farm Signature Colourways, and several one of a kind colorways--not to be repeated.  They are wonderful for hand spinning, carding with other fibers, or as the basis of  your own novelty yarns.  They can also be used for silk fusion or silk paper making.

Our rovings are special because they are hand dyed and one of a kind.  Variations within the roving are intentional and part of the inherent beauty of the hand dyeing process.  We dye in small batches using the kettle dye method of multicolour dyeing that we developed at Joybilee Farm, through several years of research and trial.  Colours may vary from dyelot to dyelot.  If you need a large quantity of one colourway for a special project please contact  us.

Our rovings are listed by metric weight.  For conversion to imperial measures--28 grams is approx. 1 ounce, 454 grams is approx. 1#.  1000 grams or 1 kg. is a little more than 2 #.

Our handdyed  100% Tussah Silk rovings are $18 per 50 grams (approx. 1.8 ounces)

Colours will vary between batches -- part of the one-of-a-kind, nature of our product.

Fire! - The summer of 2003 will long be remembered here in the Kootenay Boundary as the Summer of the Fires.  This colourway was inspired by our drives through Oosoyoos, Kelowna, and Chase during their devastating fires, when the mountainside lit up with the candling pine trees, against the black sky.  Lipstick Red, Scarlet, Fushia, Burgundy, Blue Red, Christmas Red, with a hint of purpley red and charred red.  Fire! is red hot when hand dyed in silk.  The colours just glow.
