Woad--Sarah's Natural Colour

Why I need  support  for my science research.
My project is extracurricular so there are no school funds to purchase the small amount of science equipment and consumables that I need to complete my research.  Things like ph paper, microscope slides and covers, lab stains, lab equipment and paper.  Then there are presentation expenses for photo paper, printer ink, display boards.

Many of the articles and books that I required for my research were not available in our small rural library.  What I couldn't find I had to purchase.  I also received help locating journal articles from some of my friends.

Selkirk College (Castlegar) has very generously offered to allow me to use their biology lab for dna fingerprinting of my different woad accessions and hybrid strains and their chemistry lab has offered to allow me to use their TLC equipment to test the purity of my dried woad indigo.

Thank you Selkirk College.
My High School Science Fair project has won several awards, each year that I have competed at the Regional and Nation Science Fairs.

My prizes at the Canada Wide Science Fair 2008 in Ottawa, allowed me to purchase a computer to prepare my data and presentation this year.  I would like to  get a better camera to make the microscope slides clearer and to take videos of my process in 2009.
In 2009 my project, "Woad to a Sustainable Blue, phase 3" compteted at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Winnipeg.

I believe that when a student asks adults to support their project, they should offer something of value in return.  So I have created art work -- woad dyed scarves, and shawls, as well as offering my own hand selected woad seeds to allow you to experience the wonder of woad, as I have.

The money from this venture will be put back into my science project on woad, allowing me to learn more about woad and to give more back to you on this website.
